Biggie's Estate Partners with Budweiser to Relaunch Classic Hip Hop Magazine 'Word Up!'

The iconic hip hop magazine, 'Word Up!', is making a comeback thanks to a collaboration between the Notorious B.I.G.'s estate and Budweiser. In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th birthday, the late rapper's estate has teamed up with the beer giant to revive the beloved magazine that was in print from 1987 to 2012.


'Word Up!' was not only a popular teen magazine but also a significant platform that heavily focused on Hip Hop culture. In fact, it received a shoutout by Biggie himself in his 1994 hit song "Juicy," where he rapped the lyrics, "It was all a dream; I used to read 'Word Up!' magazine."

The partnership between the late rapper's estate and Budweiser was announced in 2021, and now they have finally revealed their limited edition revival of 'Word Up!'. The upcoming issue will feature numerous stories of grit and resilience, inspired by Biggie's own journey, and will also highlight his lasting legacy that continues to inspire Hip Hop artists today.

The special edition magazine will include an opening verse from Biggie's mother, Ms. Voletta Wallace, along with contributions from industry veterans like Gerrie Summers, the founding Editor-in-Chief of 'Word Up!'. Handwritten lyrics, rare photos, personal memorabilia, and untold stories about The Notorious B.I.G. will also be featured, offering fans a deeper insight into his remarkable impact.

To coincide with the 29th anniversary of Biggie's album 'Ready to Die,' the collectible magazine will be released on September 13. Approximately 5,000 copies will be available at select locations in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Chicago. Additionally, fans will have the opportunity to view a digital copy online.

This exciting news follows another major deal struck by The Notorious B.I.G.'s family, who recently partnered with Pepsi for a campaign that aims to bring the artist's music to life through virtual and physical experiences and events. Pepsi has also re-released a 1997 Biggie freestyle where he mentions the brand, further immortalizing his connection with the soda company.

As Hip Hop celebrates its 50th anniversary and its cultural impact on the world, the dedication to honoring Christopher Wallace's (Biggie's) legacy is evident. Not only are partnerships like the one with Budweiser and Pepsi continuing to celebrate his artistry, but his son CJ Wallace is also collaborating with TIME Studios for an upcoming documentary that will provide an intimate look into the life of one of the greatest rappers of all time.
