The Restoration of God's Ten Commandments was initiated in the 1990s by Ugandan Christian leader Joseph Kibwetre. The movement is based on a mix of Aboriginal and Catholic beliefs, and Kibwetel claims to have spoken to the Virgin Mary.
Many followers joined the movement as it was very popular in Uganda and other countries. According to the apocalypse messages, only those who follow the teachings of Kibwetere and his inner circle will be saved from the destruction of the sun.
In March 2000, Kibwetere and several other movement leaders disappeared, along with most of their supporters. About 900 people died in the incident known as the "Kanungu Massacre". It was later determined that they all died by suicide or murder. While the actual motive for the murder is still unknown, it is believed to be a combination of financial fraud and a desire to hasten the end of the world.
